“Each season takes us someplace new…and someplace we’ve been before…”
The LORD has done wonderful things at Geneva Classical Academy since our door opened in 1996—yes, our door, only one—one little classroom, five kindergarteners, and one teacher.
In the late spring of 1996, Sabrena Smothers was searching the options for a school for her daughter’s kindergarten year. A seed was planted by a friend who was a member of the Board at The Geneva School in Orlando, a classical Christian school. “Why not start a classical Christian school in Polk County?”
After attending an information night in Orlando with another mom, Kristi Breed, and researching the classical model, they spread the word among others interested in the opportunity. In the Lord’s timing, there were others motivated by reading Recovering the Lost Tools of Learning: An Approach to Distinctively Christian Education by Douglas Wilson. This spawned a potential Board of Directors, including, Dr. John H. Ball III, Bo and Sandy Raulerson, Jack and Kristi Breed, Craig Mundy, Bobby and Sabrena Smothers, and a willing teacher, Kem Cook. All interested parties began to pray for the Lord’s direction.
Walking in Faith
During these prayerful days, several heard a sermon from the scripture text Matthew 14:22-29. The focus of the sermon was our willingness to walk in faith and obedience to whatever the Lord was calling us to do. In this text, Peter gets out of the boat to walk in faith toward Jesus when he calls. The classical Christian model of education was not available in Polk County and the Lord had laid its benefits on many hearts. Were they willing to get out of the boat as well?
A non-profit organization was formed, the Board was established, a teacher was hired, a location was secured, five kindergarten students were enrolled, and Geneva Classical Academy was born in September 1996. Mrs. Charlotte Breed blessed the school with financial assistance that made all the difference in the early years. The Lord’s faithful hand had provided for every need.
Geneva Classical Academy was born out of a love for our Lord and Savior who is the Giver of all wisdom and truth. It was born out of a love for teaching and training the next generation to defend the truth as it is revealed in God’s word. It was born out of a love for seeing students love the gift of learning. It was born out of a love for the classical Christian model.
Christ is the One who directed the hearts of that founding board and initial teacher to be obedient to the call in 1996. He is the One who has continually provided for our needs. We do not yet know all the seeds He has planted in the hearts of the students that come and go year after year…but we do know His purposes will be fulfilled.
May it always be said of Geneva, “One generation shall praise Thy works to another, and shall declare Thy mighty acts.” Psalm 145:4
