The 9th and 10th grade classes will be taking a field trip to Weedon Island Nature Preserve in St. Petersburg. This trip is intended as an introduction to marine science preceding the Marine Lab trip in February. We will leave school around 9 am and will return by the end of the school day. Parents are welcome to attend the trip, but will be required to pay the participant fee of $12. We will need some parent volunteers to help transport students to and from Weedon Island – please let me know if you are able and willing to do so.

Students  (and adult participants, if they desire) will be sein netting, which will involve getting into knee to waist high water depending on the tides. The goal is to pull up any benthic marine life which may be present – in my experience, seining at Weedon Island is often highly successful. The preserve also has an extensive boardwalk trail which we will have the opportunity to hike. Participants will need to wear clothing that is able to get wet, including closed shoes (toes, heel, and sides of feet must be covered – old tennis shoes are often a good option). A complete list of what to bring can be found below:

Field Trip Packing List:

  • Packed lunch (we will have a 20-30 minute lunch break in the middle of the day)
  • Reusable water bottle (Weedon Island is fairly strict about this)
  • Hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses
  • Bug spray
  • Notepad and pen
  • Plastic bag for wet shoes and clothes
  • Change of clothes and shoes for after activity
