Many of us seeking the best education possible for our children are doing so at a deficit; we are doing our best to give them the kind of education that we ourselves did not have. Many of us never studied Aristotle, Augustine, or Dante. We were not taught Latin or Greek and did not receive instruction in philosophy or theology. We don’t have a true liberal arts education. Geneva not only gives this to our children, we take every opportunity to teach the adults in our community as well.
Geneva Faculty training is on-going. We take our teachers to local and national conferences, like this year’s trip to the Association of Classical Christian Schools conference in Orlando. Furthermore, the Faculty has read and discussed Poetic Knowledge, Eternity in Their Hearts, and this year we are reading and discussing The Seven Laws of Teaching.
Not only do our teachers keep learning, our parent education is frequent, as well. In addition to learning our children’s facts for Bible, history, and math, our parents also learn English and Latin grammar while helping our children study. Geneva parents have been heard a myriad of times saying something like, “I wish I could be in second grade again.” Or fourth, or sixth, or eighth!
Beyond homework, parents, like our teachers, do book studies that revolve around our Upper School curriculum. We have read and discussed Gilgamesh, an introduction to formal logic, and this year we are studying Frankenstein. Further, we bring in guest speakers, like Dr. Louis Markos, author of From Achilles to Christ: Why Christians Should Read the Pagan Classics, to enlighten and inspire us in educating our children. Parents on their own journey to greater learning are more likely to keep their kids on track. Kids love what we love.
Geneva’s Board of Governors also endeavors to advance in their own education. We have read and discussed Norms and Nobility and various articles to keep priorities. Geneva Classical Academy truly is a community of faith and learning.
