Have You Noticed the Science Lab?

by | Mar 18, 2013 | News

Lory Pyle has recently become certified by NASA to handle moon rocks.  Did you know that the US is the only country to possess moon rocks? And do you know that there are extremely strict and thorough rules for the handling and security of said moon rocks?  When a certified handler of the moon rocks (which will also have some meteorite pieces included in the collection) receives them, it is for a very limited time and she has detailed dos and don’ts – she can be inspected at any time during the rocks ‘stay.”  Geneva’s very own Ms. Pyle has made it possible for our students and parents to enjoy this rare opportunity at some point in the near future. Stay tuned!

Ms. Pyle is very pleased to be teaching at Geneva and has delighted in her new students and in sharing with them her love of science.  She is busy building our lab equipment collection as well as building our students’ laboratory experience, their understanding of the history and philosophy of science (the ‘how we know what we know’ stuff).  In her 14+ years experience in classical and Christian education (in addition to 18 years in public schools) she has truly valued the freedom given to her to connect ideas – and their consequences – across many disciplines with her students.
Stop into the lab and ask her about it.

Lory has exciting trips and clubs forming under her advisory.  She has recently begun a fencing club in which participants will match up against students from The Paideia School of Tampa Bay.  She is planning a multiple day field trip to the Florida Keys for next year, a well-loved trip she has led for her students over the years.   Her first overnight trip for Geneva students took place last week with a trip to Brevard Community College Planetarium and Observatory with a stop on the beach for some lessons in riptides, shore zones and other oceanic study.

Parents are invited and encouraged to observe any of Ms. Pyle’s classes to see and hear her love of science…and of her students.  Call the school office to schedule an observation opportunity.
